Take the Honey and Run
Read for Cozy Mystery Book Club (watch the meeting recording here to get more thoughts on this book!) and got sucked into the author’s cozy world of engaging characters. I love the bee references and honey recipes. I thought it was pretty low stakes overall but the writing and characters are enough to make me read the second book in the series, and possibly more from the author from there.
Kill or Bee Killed
I really liked this second book in the bee keeping series. I felt like I was able to solve the mystery along with the sleuth, which I didn’t get from the first book. I also really loved how some of the characters came to life - especially the great-aunts. I’m a bit confused about how the Sawyer/Bailey/Daisy thing will play out because... SPOILERS!
I feel like it’s pretty obvious at this point, and the longer it takes to get it out in the open, the more I side-eye Bailey. It’s tarnishing her character a bit in my eyes, honestly. I mean, maybe Sawyer isn’t the dad, but I feel like any other explanation would be super weird at this point. A rape seems to not fit in with the vibe of the series, and if it’s Evie’s brother’s, there’s still an issue of not telling him. I understand her not telling Sawyer for a long time because she couldn’t find him, but they’ve been back in touch a few months at this point, as far as I can tell by the book’s timeline. Which is another issue… I swear the first book mentioned Bailey was about 32. Then in this book, it mentions she and Evie have been friends since they were 8, and specifically mentions their twenty-four year friendship. That also adds up to 32. Then a few pages later, she mentions that she just turned 30 that year and has a 12yo daughter. It doesn’t add up and I feel like part of that is probably trying to retcon the Bailey/Sawyer teenage relationship.
Overall, the series pulled me in and I'd definitely read a third installment. There, depending on how the issue of Daisy's father is handled, I'd decide to keep reading or not.
