Though I'm writing this in the new year, I actually finished this book on Christmas. I read it in about two days, but once I finished, I needed to sit and think before reviewing it. I gave it 3 stars right away because it kept me turning pages and I had no clue what was going to happen, which definitely makes for an interesting read and deserves credit.
Even weeks later, I'm still not sure how I feel about it. The premise was amazing. I knew it was a thriller but the idea of attending a writing retreat and just escaping real life for awhile was so enticing, especially since I was reading it over the holidays so "real life" didn't even feel like a thing.
Potential spoilers ahead...
The story sucked me in right away. I love that this outspoken yet mysterious author was hosting a retreat for other women writers. And the I loved the raised stakes of them having to complete a novel in their time there. And I even loved some of the more "out-there" aspects, like the drugging and weird happenings around the house.
And again, I know it was a thriller, but when all the murders started happening... it kind of lost me. I'm not against gore but it seemed a bit unbelievable, and I think I was so intrigued by the psychological aspects that I thought it could stand on that alone.
That said, I would definitely read more by this author and see what else she comes up with. It kept my interest and I didn't really know what was going on, so it certainly was a book worth reading based on that merit alone.
Have you read this book? What did you think?
